Summer is the season of longer days, warmer weather, and the greatest Yang. In Chinese Medicine, it belongs to the Fire element, symbolizing a time of heat, outgoingness, and expansion in nature and in our lives. The heart, which houses the Shen (aka our Spirit or Mind), is ruled by the Fire element. When our Fire element is balanced, our heart is strong, our mind is balanced, and sleep is sound. Tips for Summer health:
- Rise earlier in the morning. Go to bed by 11 pm. Rest and take a nap midday.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and reapply accordingly. Get outside and run wild.
During this time of Yang, it is important to eat foods that will help cool the body and nourish the fluids. Include in your diet watermelon, tomato, cucumber, mint, honeydew melon, mung beans, peach, and spinach.
